Second Workshop of the Forum Kunst und Markt / Centre for Art Market Studies at the department of Modern Art History, Technische Universität Berlin

Berlin’s history, full of turns and fractures, is also mirrored in the history of its art market – the subject of the second workshop of the Forum Kunst und Markt. In what situations was the market determined by the politics of those in power – such as Wilhelm II’s critique of the French avant-garde or the National Socialists’ repression and destruction of “degenerate” art – and when did it assert its independence? What were the consequences of the limitations brought about by the partition of the city and what phenomena can we observe since reunification?
