Theft & Trade. The French Art Market Under German Occupation (1940-1944)

Each fall, the Deutsches Zentrum Kulturgutverluste (German Lost Art Foundation) hosts a specialist conference. This year, noted French and German experts will give lectures on the subject of systematic art theft in France, reviewing the results of research performed on this topic in both countries under the heading “Theft & Trade. The French Art Market under German Occupation (1940-1944)”.
The German Lost Art Foundation is pleased to invite interested parties to attend the public conference between November 30, 2017 and December 1, 2017 at the Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle der Bundesrepublik Deutschland (Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany), Friedrich-Ebert-Allee 4, 53113 Bonn.
Conference languages: French and German
Who were the stakeholders, and who were the people who were robbed? How did Nazi policies, art historical expertise and market interests intertwine? How did the collaboration work? The conference will explore all these questions, additionally creating a thematic focus via the presentation of new research outcomes on acquisitions by Hildebrand Gurlitt in France. Works of art from the so-called “Schwabinger Kunstfund” (Art Fund of Schwabing) will be introduced in the exhibition “Dossier Gurlitt. Nazi Art Theft and its Consequences”, which will run at the Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle in Bonn at the same time.
The conference is organised by the Deutsches Zentrum Kulturgutverluste (German Lost Art Foundation) in collaboration with the Deutsches Forum für Kunstgeschichte Paris (German Art History Forum Paris) and the Forum Kunst und Markt at the Technische Universität Berlin (Centre for Art Market Studies at Berlin’s Technical University).

Chaque automne, le Deutsche Zentrum Kulturgutverluste organise un colloque thématique. Sous le titre « Spoliation et trafic. Le marché de l’art français sous l’occupation allemande (1940–1944) », des experts français et allemands de renom présenteront cette année des communications sur la spoliation systématique des œuvres d’art en France et confronteront les résultats des recherches menées sur ce thème dans les deux pays.
Le Deutsche Zentrum Kulturgutverluste invite au colloque public qui aura lieu du 30 novembre 2017 au 1er décembre 2017 à la Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle der Bundesrepublik Deutschland (Centre National d’Art et d’Expositions de la République Fédérale d’Allemagne), Friedrich-Ebert-Allee 4, 53113 Bonn.
Langues de la conférence: français et allemande
Qui furent les acteurs, qui furent les spoliés? De quelle manière la politique nazie, l’expertise de l’histoire de l’art et les intérêts de marché étaient-ils imbriqués? Comment fonctionnait la collaboration? Le colloque souhaite aborder toutes ces questions mais il veut aussi mettre l’accent sur le thème des acquisitions de Hildebrand Gurlitt en France en présentant des nouveaux résultats de recherche. En parallèle, des œuvres d’art issues du dit « trésor artistique de Munich » seront montrées dans une exposition intitulée: « Inventaire Gurlitt. La spoliation des œuvres d’art par l’occupant nazi et ses conséquences » à la Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle de Bonn.
Le colloque est organisé par le Deutsches Zentrum Kulturgutverluste en coopération avec le Centre allemand d’histoire de l’art Paris et le Forum Kunst und Markt de la Technische Universität Berlin (Centre for Art Market Studies de l’Université Technique de Berlin).
